While the Mercedes-Benz E63 AMG and the Vauxhall VXR8 GTS wouldn’t strike you as rivals, they are a match for each other in terms of size, weight and power. This makes them excellent candidates for what should be a close drag race.

With the optional power pack specified, the Mercedes spins its rears with the force of 577 hp, while the Vauxhall is only 1 hp down on it. What does set them apart significantly is the gearbox and the way it changes the character and nature of the cars.

As EVO’s Henry Catchpole explains, it’s actually harder to launch the Merc off the line, even with its electronic start aid and sportiest driving mode selected. However, after setting off, its seven-speed self-shifter easily gives it the edge over the other car that comes with a conventional manual.
