Citroen is a brand that just grows on you the more you learn about it, and while you may not like all the decisions taken along the way, most of these resulted in cars that are still talked about today, looked at, analyzed and appreciated.
The more you look back through the brand’s history, the more you see just how little significance the double chevron has today, when it’s meant to be the bottom name in the PSA range, sitting below both Peugeot and DS.
So, if you want to get yourself informed about Citroens don’t, whatever you do, start with their modern cars. The brand’s glory days are long behind it, and while it still makes stylish and quirky cars today, these are mechanically identical to Peugeots, to keep costs down.
The most saddening thing of all is that the final link between modern Citroen and the old brand was the self-leveling suspension which has been slowly phased out and now the only car you can get it with is the C5 (which will go out of production soon).
But it’s not all bad news, as the brand is showing signs of recovering part of its identity – the C4 Cactus is arguably the quirkiest and most quintessentially Citroen vehicle literally for decades. The C4 Picasso is not bad either, but it’s more mainstream than the Cactus.
Part of what makes Citroen special is explained in the X-CAR video below.
