You just can’t make fun of BMW’s expansion plans these days. A few years back, we were jesting about the possibility of seeing the Bavarians fill every gap in their numerical nomenclature, yet now, it’s happening right in front of our eyes.
Only a week after BMW confirmed the larger-than-life X7 SUV, reports from Germany are saying that a new 9-Series Concept will break cover at this month’s Beijing Auto Show.
The news comes from AutoMotorunSport magazine, which cites BMW Group board circles as the source, adding that the concept will be built on a modified version of the next 7-Series saloon’s flexible (and lightweight) architecture that will be shared with the future Rolls Royce Phantom.
The report says the source did not provide any information on the body-style type of the 9-Series Concept. Last year, BMW showcased the Pininfarina Gran Lusso V12 Coupé study at the Concorso d’Eleganza Villa d’Este (pictured here). It was a luxurious two-door model, similar in philosophy to the Mercedes-Benz S-Class Coupe.
You’re more than welcome to offer your thoughts on what the concept could be, but if the car does indeed carry the 9-Series moniker, then according to BMW’s naming system that uses odd numbers for more traditional shapes and even numbers for sportier designs, it should be a bigger and more luxurious saloon than the 7er.
