If you take a gander at BMW‘s SAV/SAC (X-series) nomenclature, you will realize that a few numbers are missing through 10. Who knows what the future holds for anything bigger than “6”, but deep down inside, most of us had a hunch that BMW would, at some point, fill in the single gap in the number range from 1 to 6 with the X2.
We haven’t heard anything official from the Bavarian automaker, but Bimmerpost forum member and alleged BMW insider Scott26, claims that, “BMW has confirmed the X2 for introduction in 2017”, adding that it will be a sister model to the next generation, FWD-platform based X1.
According to the poster, the X2 will be offered only with xDrive (all-wheel drive) and a choice of two body styles, with three and five doors, which would add a new twist to the series, as both the X4 and X6 “Sport Activity Coupes” are available only with five doors.
He also mentioned that the BMW Group said the next Paceman “will feature 5-doors for added practicality” and “the next Countryman influenced by the Dakar-winning competition car as a proper go-anywhere SUV than before”.
If the above holds true – and that’s a big if, given that the current Paceman is in fact, a three-door version of the Countryman, then the latter would have to be quiet different in styling, size and overall philosophy to justify the existence of both five-door models in the range.
