The Plus 4 is a lightweight car that doesn’t need a nuclear bomb under the bonnet to make decent progress. Still, we heard a report that Morgan decided that the 145 hp it gets from its Ford two-liter engine was not enough, so they announced “the most powerful Plus 4 ever,” which it is, we have no doubt, but all they did was remap the engine’s ECU for a measly 9 hp (and 11 Nm/8 lb-ft) gain.

Now I’m sorry, but as much as we all love Morgan and what it stands for, as it continues to go anti-clockwise and buck the trend of the modern world, it’s not fair to raise our hopes up this much and let our minds conjure up turbocharged 300 hp wooden monsters, and then have them instantly deflated by 9 horsepower… which in fact wouldn’t be instant at all; it’d take hours.

The vine tells us that no other modifications have been made to it, so it’s fair to assume the power increase will at best shave three tents off the current model’s 0-100 km/h (0-62 mph) time of 7.5 seconds – I don’t think it will be enough to make a big impact on the top speed, either, since the Plus 4 is not what you’d call aerodynamic…
