Renault has announced a new diesel engine, the Energy dCi 160 Twin Turbo. The first 1.6-liter diesel to benefit from twin-turbocharging delivers 160PS (158hp) and 380 Nm (280 lb-ft) of torque, figures more common for a 2.0-liter diesel engine.
However, compared to 2.0-liter units, Renault’s Energy dCi 160 Twin Turbo is around 25 percent more economical and eco-friendly. This is why Renault says the new engine will be available mostly for its forthcoming D- and E- segment models.
The use of Twin Turbo technology ensures a blend of low-end torque and high power at higher revs, with both enhancing driving enjoyment. The system includes two sequential turbo-compressors. The first is a very low inertia turbo that provides high low-end torque for crisp pull-away and mid-range acceleration. 90 percent of peak torque is available from 1,500 rpm.
The second turbo takes over at the higher-end and produces high power (100 hp per liter) at faster engine speeds to ensure smooth, linear, dependable acceleration right the way up to maximum revs. The new engine is said to benefit from Renault’s F1 expertise in the field of “sophisticated turbochargers” and in other areas such as cooling and friction reduction.
The fuel injection system of the Energy dCi 160 Twin Turbo operates at a pressure of 1,800 bar to function with the twin turbocharger. It complies with Euro 6b emissions legislation and incorporates a NOx Trap and particulate filter regeneration system.
Renault didn’t say it specifically, but the new engine should be on display at the company’s Geneva Motor Show booth.
