The Audi R8 is a special car that needs a special factory and special people in order to create it. The location, the headquarters of Quattro GmbH, is in Neckarsulm, where they also build the A6 and A8 (two cars acutely suffering of…sameness), however, the mid-engined supercar gets its own separate production line and team of people behind it.
Drive recently flew to Germany to do a video piece of what goes on there, and the result can be seen after the virtual jump.
It goes through the complete production process for a car, from welding the chassis together out of aluminum pieces mounted on a jig to final fit and finish. The emphasis seems to be on the human touch each car receives as it is manually assembled with only limited robotic aid.
They don’t make these cars in any kind of old-fashioned way, and in fact, every corner of the facility oozes high-tech. See for yourself by scrolling down and clicking the play button.
