Take that Russia (well, kind of…)! A Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) officer captured a falling meteorite that lighted up the sky while patrolling the Hawk Hills area outside of Manning in northern Alberta last Saturday evening.
While short in duration, the spectacular footage showed the bright fireball-like object hurling through the Canadian sky turning night into day – it’s as if someone opened the lights….
Frank Florian from the Telus World of Science confirmed the sighting in an interview with CTV News:
“Definitely what people saw this weekend, on Saturday night, if they were out and about around 9:35 p.m., was a very very bright meteor,” he said. “Sometimes, it’s deemed a fireball because it far exceeds a regular streak of light which is a normal meteor. This one was definitely substantial in size and created a nice light show for anyone out and about on Saturday night.”
According to Florian, this was likely a one-off event and not part of a meteor shower.
