Undeniably, the Corvette is the forefather and the golden standard of American sports cars. GM’s halo model has been setting the tone in the upper echelons of the segment in one way or another for the past six decades, and hopes to continue doing so in its latest incarnation, the 2014 Corvette Stingray C7.

The only other true challenger to come out from Detroit, at least when it comes to the top performance versions of the Corvette, is the SRT Viper (formerly sold under the Dodge nameplate), which was renewed last year with the presentation of the fifth generation model.

To be fair, with a starting price of $99,995, the 2013 SRT Viper that sports a 640HP 8.4-liter V10 is positioned closer towards the Z06 and even more so the ZR1 performance versions of the Corvette, but since Chevrolet has only released the base 450HP Stingray that starts at just $51,995, Edmunds went with what it had in its hands. The tested version of the Viper retails for $101,990, while the Z51-package Corvette Stingray, for $69,675.
