If you were wondering whether the BMW i8 was going to be any good when not driven on a frozen lake (like in the second posted video), EVO’s Harry Metcalfe is on duty again to find out. This time, he gets a chance to experience the plug-in hybrid coupe on track, and play with all of the different driving modes it will have to offer.
Still hiding underneath some lighter camouflage, the i8 is all-but revealed at this stage, on the outside, though the interior was still kept under wraps – literally. Regarding the driving experience, it really seems like BMW has pulled off the integration of three different power plants into one seamlessly driving package, as Metcalfe discovers when he throws it into a few corners.
The handling is reportedly very good, power is seamless, and the end conclusion is that if “feels quite natural to drive,” which is high praise for something this complicated. That’s partly down to the relatively low weight for a vehicle of this sort, and in part to the clever way in which the engineers have set it up to operate.
The veil will drop at the Frankfurt motor show, where we will finally get to see it completely uncovered for the first time. For us, it’s definitely one of the main highlights of the German motoring venue.
