There’s something very appealing about buying a British coupe, even a modern one, of any size or power rating. With a lengthy history behind them, the attraction is understandable, and it is only strengthened if we are to look at what such cars are still being made there today.

Two of the more popular ones in the upper echelons of luxury coupes are the Bentley Continental GT and the Aston Martin Vanquish, though, the former is infinitely more common. Both cars are great in their own way, but after watching the latest Head2Head episode from Motor Trend which pits the two cars against each another, one understands that they appeal to very different people.

As MT’s Carlos Lago says, the Aston is definitely a much better vehicle when both are standing still, as it just looks so much sleeker than the Bentley, however, once on the move, its slow gearbox, and “traditional rear-wheel drive” behavior may not be to everybody’s taste. The GT Speed is a much more comfortable (and even faster) car, but with its noticeable extra weight and all-wheel drive, it’s nowhere near as nimble.

However, not even the Aston, which looks and sounds like a quick car can avoid being called a bit lazy and GT-ish, rather than being an out-and-out supercar. Still, an interesting comparison and a fair conclusion.
