What’s an S-Class without a flagship S600 model? Following the release of the S63 AMG (pictured here), Mercedes-Benz will complete its S-Class range with three important new models in the near future: the V12-powered S600 and S65 AMG, plus the S500 plug-in hybrid.
According to a report from Car&Driver, Mercedes-Benz will premiere the S 65 AMG at the Los Angeles Auto Show in November. While the previous generation S 65 AMG developed 612 horsepower, the new model is expected to have a slight bump in output and around 200 pounds (91 kg) less weight.
This will translate into faster acceleration, with the 0 to 60 sprint to be covered in under four seconds (4.2 seconds for the previous model). The new S65 AMG will be powered by the same 6.0-liter twin-turbo V12 engine, albeit in a more powerful state of tune.
Mercedes-Benz will save another new S-Class model for the Detroit Auto Show in January, more specifically the range-topping S600 V12 model. Traditionally the most luxurious S-Class, the next S600 will be powered by a 6.0-liter V12 engine with a more comfort-orientated setup than the sportier S65 AMG. There is no information about the engine’s output, but it’s safe to say Mercedes will add a few ponies to the previous model’s 510 hp.
But before the two V12-powered models, the Stuttgart-based carmaker will launch the S500 plug-in hybrid at the Frankfurt auto show this September. The report says the model will use the hybrid powertrain of the 2011 Vision S500 plug-in hybrid concept.
Powered by a 3.5-liter V6 and a 60-hp electric motor, the 2009 Vision S500 boasted an all-electric range of 18 miles (29 km) and could sprint from 0 to 60 mph (96 km/h) in 5.4 seconds. Although final specs have not been revealed, the production S500 should not be too far off the concept. The S500 is expected to go on sale in early 2015.
