It is only a matter of time before BMW brings out the big guns with the M-badged version of the new generation X5 SUV, which was revealed to the world in standard and M Sport package trims at the end of May.

Carscoops reader Mark A. who snapped these photos of a camouflaged X5 in Las Vegas has some doubts whether this is the M model or someone playing tricks with wraps, but we can assure him that if anything, this looks like a genuine BMW prototype.

“Not the best pictures… Unfortunately, it seems the camera focused on the window,” Mark told us in an email. “Spotted cruising down the strip on June 29th in 47C weather. Had one hell of a rumble to it, And a very sporty M look about it… would have loved a closer look…I’m not convinced it’s not someone just trying to make their own X5 look spy worthy,” he said.

Well Mark, judging by the oversized rubber wrapping deep-dish wheels all four corners of the SUV and the rear diffuser with what look like twin exhaust pipes on both ends, we’d say this is indeed a prototype of the soon-to-be revealed X5M.

Due for launch next year, the new X5M is expected to keep the same twin-turbocharged 4.4-litre V8 engine connected to an all-wheel drive system of the current model, perhaps with some improvements in terms of fuel consumption and CO2 emissions.

Thanks to Mark for the scoop!
