With at least two years remaining before BMW will launch an all-new BMW 7-Series, the Bavarian carmaker has decided to give us a history lesson and talk about the first generation of its flagship luxury sedan in a new official video.
Launched in 1977, the E23 7-Series incorporated BMW’s finest in terms of luxury and technology. It was available exclusively with six-cylinder engines culminating with the 249hp 745i sporting a turbocharged 3.2-liter unit (or an M635 CSi-derived 282hp/286PS 3.5-liter naturally-aspirated six if you happened to live in South Africa).
Naturally, BMW had to play it safe with the design so that it didn’t alienate its buyers, which is why the first-generation 7-Series looked quite similar to its 5-Series and 3-Series contemporaries. BMW called this strategy “Eine Wurst, drei Grösse”, which translates to one sausage, three sizes […].
The E23 was more spacious and luxurious than any other BMW model at the time, and had a list of available features that was the longest ever for any BMW. Customers could spec features like an air conditioning system, electric rear seats and many more.
You can watch BMW’s homage to the E23 7-Series in the video below.
