If you ever wondered why Porsche fans called the 911 GT2 series the “widow maker”, just consider this: the GT2 series is essentially a 911 Turbo without the all-wheel drive system that allows the latter to behave in a more cooperative and civilized manner, with even more power and less weight. Do we need to say more?

With the presentation of the new 991 Turbo and Turbo S having taken place last month, we have an idea of what to expect when the next generation of the GT2 hits Porsche dealerships next year.

What you will find hanging behind the rear axle is the latest 911 Turbo’s 3.8-liter flat-six engine with direct injection tuned to deliver somewhere around 560-horses, an increase of at least 40hp over the Plain Jane Turbo. All those ponies are expected to be delivered to the rear wheels exclusively through a seven-speed dual-clutch transmission – just like on the 469hp GT3.

The elimination of the Turbo’s all-wheel drive system together with the use of lighter materials (think aluminum and carbon fiber) for and under the body will result in a significant weight reduction – for example, the previous GT2 was more than 400 pounds (190kg, to be precise) lighter than the 911 Turbo!

These spy shots of an almost undisguised 911 GT2 prototype testing on the ‘Ring show that the fastest production 911 of all time will look the part as well.
