Mitsubishi had abruptly stopped production of the Outlander plug-in hybrid (PHEV), as the battery packs they were using to power the green SUV had some serious safety concerns associated with them. Now that the problem has been sorted out, Green Car Reports is saying that the Japanese automaker is to double production from September of this year.
This means the previously announced 2,000 units per month will turn into 4,000 units per month, with the main markets for the model expected to be the JDM and US. Customers from the latter will undoubtedly appreciate its EPA-rated all-electric driving range of 20 to 25 miles and strong combined pulling power from both the motor and petrol engine.
I like the Outlander hybrid because it is an understated green car, which doesn’t scream out about its fuel-saving measures like some other vehicles do. Sure, it’s nice to tell everybody that you’re saving the environment, but the feeling will be ten times greater if you do it for yourself and the planet, instead of doing it to impress.
