I’ve always been a fan of all generation SEAT Leons, which are very impressive cars, with solid underpinnings, good interiors and different styling. The second-gen car ditched the angular lines altogether, and went for a totally different look, but now, with the third generation model that’s already here, they’ve changed styling philosophy yet again.

However, as always, it is based on the same platform as the VW Golf, in this case the new MQB setup, and according to this latest review by Carbuyer (and other testers) it is a great alternative to the German model.

There’s really not that much to think about – it’s a Golf, in a more stylish body, with a slightly simpler interior and harder suspension to keep the sporting impression that SEAT wants to offer. It also shares much of its engine range with the German car, but for me, the best choice would be the top spec FR trim 2.0-liter diesel, which pushes the car to 62 mph (100 km/h) in 7.5 seconds.

The Leon is also cheaper than the Golf, and it gets higher-tech features, like the full-LED headlights – it is the only non-premium car to offer them, and they not only improve visibility, but they also make the car look a lot cooler and more modern from the front.
