Not content with covering all the mainstream and even niche ends of the compact executive segment with the new 3-Series Sedan, Touring and Gran Turismo, and in the coming months, the 4-Series Coupe and Convertible models as well, BMW is now carving a…niche within a niche, with a sixth body style, the 4-Series Gran Coupe.
Whereas the 3-Series Gran Turismo is designed as an alternative to the 3-Series Sedan and Touring models, the new 4-Series Gran Coupe promises to combine the practicality of the 3-Series Sedan’s four doors with the longer wheelbase of the 3-Series Gran Turismo and the looks of the 4-Series Coupe.
While the extended 2,920mm wheelbase of the Gran Turismo, which is 110mm longer than that of the 3-Series sedan, will result in greater rear-seat leg and knee room than its four-door sibling, the lower and more coupe-like roofline will likely hamper headroom compared to 3-Series models, all in the name of a sportier look.
BMW has covered most body parts of the Gran Coupe prototypes in camouflage, but it’s almost certain that the front and rear ends will bear a strong resemblance to the 4-Series Coupe and Convertible cars that will be revealed this fall.
Unsurprisingly, the Gran Coupe will cherry pick the more potent turbocharged gasoline and diesel units found on the 3-Series range, including a 2.0-liter inline-four petrol with 242hp (245PS), a 3.0-liter inline-six petrol with 302hp (306PS) and 2.0-liter and 3.0-liter turbo diesels with up to 254hp (258PS). All-wheel will be offered as an option with certain engines.
The new 4-Series Gran Coupe will be presented early next year.
