The Mercedes-Benz C63 AMG Coupe and the Ford Shelby GT500 Mustang are two different cars from two separate schools of thought that we seriously doubt will ever be cross-shopped by consumers even in North America where they are both available. In Europe, even if one wanted to, you can’t officially buy the Ford.
Despite their many differences, there’s one thing that both cars lay claim to being good at: straight line acceleration, and it is this aspect of the two sports models that UK car magazine EVO set out to put to the test with a good ol’ fashion drag race.
Detroit’s proposition comes with a 5.8-liter supercharged V8 generating a ridiculous output of 662bhp at 6,250 rpm and 631 lb.-ft. (856Nm) of peak torque at 4,000 rpm.
For this drag race, the publication chose the base version of the C63 AMG Coupe fitted with a 6.2-liter naturally aspirated V8 lump rated at 451bhp (457PS) and 443 lb-ft (600Nm), though, Mercedes also offers an upgrade package that lifts output to 481bhp (487PS) as well as a Black Edition version with 510hp (517PS).
In the U.S., the Shelby GT500 Mustang retails for $54,995 (equal to £33,750 and €41,400) and the C63 AMG Coupe for $59,800 (£36,700 and €45,050), with both prices excluding taxes (i.e. in Massachusetts, it’s 6.25%) and handling/delivery fee.
Since the Ford isn’t offered in the UK, we can only tell you the price of the C63 AMG that sells for £58,130 OTR (equal to $94,800 and €71,400).
We’re guessing some of you may already know who the winner will be, but why spoil it for the rest? Head over the break to see how this race played out.
