Audi appears to be working on a GT derivative of the second-gen R8, with a mysterious prototype caught on camera recently undergoing testing.
Scooped in motion on the streets of Germany, the supercar has a few thin layers of vinyl on certain parts of the exterior.
The camouflage stretches across the front end, covers parts of the quarter panels and side skirts, and is used at the rear, too. From what we can discern, it appears that this prototype features large oval exhaust tips flanking the slightly bigger diffuser at the rear and a reworked front bumper. Also, it shouldn’t be confused with the limited edition R8 V10 Plus that was unveiled earlier today, as the prototype clearly has a more prominent grille and different front and side air intakes and does away with the former’s canard plates.
The spy video was brought to our attention by a CarScoops reader, who made an interesting remark. Quoting an alleged Audi insider, he said that the R8 GT’s output will be “similar to the Huracan Performante“. Since the R8 V10 Plus puts out 610 PS (602 HP,) it makes sense for the GT to produce something similar, if not identical, to the Performante’s 640 PS (631 HP / 470kW).

Once the King of the Nurburgring, the Huracan Performante has a top speed in excess of 325km/h (201mph) and can go from rest to 100km/h (0-62mph) in 2.9 seconds, so performance for the top R8 should be close to that.
Mentioning the famous German track isn’t accidental, as our reader also said that Audi could attempt to set a record on the Nurburgring.
However, until Audi decides to either confirm or deny a possible R8 GT, we’ll take this information with a grain of salt for now.
