BMW will soon be rolling out a new 3 Series, although, even after it arrives, the extended-roof versions of the old model will continue to be sold alongside the new sedan.

A spokesman for the Bavarian automaker confirmed the staggered rollout to CarsDirect. The plan is to leave the current Sports Wagon (internally known as the F31) and Gran Turismo slantback (F34) in showrooms even after the F30 sedan is replaced by the new G20 model.

That is, at least, for the 2019 model year. After that, we can expect a new 3 Series GT (likely to be dubbed G24) and wagon (G31) to arrive to relieve the old models.

Still, the days of the diesel wagon in the US are numbered, as the 328d xDrive Sports Wagon is not expected to be replaced on these shores. The sedan version, currently offered in both rear- and all-wheel drive versions, presumably will. (The Gran Turismo is not offered in the US with a diesel.)

Though BMW doesn’t break down its sales by body-style, the 3 Series remains one of its most important models in the US market. Of the 153,386 vehicles the automaker has sold here so far this year (as of the end of last month), 24,180 came from the 3 Series – more than any of the manufacturer’s other passenger cars, and just a few hundred shy of the X3 and X5.

In fact, BMW has sold more 3 Series models in the US this year than the entire Mini brand as a whole. Thus, the arrival of the new model – expected to be unveiled in Paris this fall – ought to even further elevate sales.
