Proving once again that social media can be a double-edged sword at times, Top Gear UK came under fire when its twitter account, which is run by BBC Worldwide, broke a two-minute silence on Sunday, 11:00am, to honor Britain’s war dead.

The show’s Twitter page at BBC_TopGear posted a tweet at 11:01am that read:

“Most-watched vid on #TopGear this week? Behind-the-scenes at TG mag’s pan-American race between a Bentley… and a train…”

Naturally, the move caused a Twitter backlash with even the show’s host Jeremy Clarkson chirping in to speak his mind:

“@MrJacHart @bbc_topgear Please tell me you’re f@cking joking.”

Once he received confirmation, Clarkson wrote:

“@BBC_TopGear You sent this out during the 2 minute silence. Astonishingly stupid.”

BBC Worldwide admitted the mistake and issued the following statement:

“BBC Worldwide profusely apologises for the automated tweet that coincided with this morning’s two minute silence to honour our Armed Forces. Our social media team will put measures in place to ensure something like this is never repeated.”

In related news, Clarkson today posted a fresh tweet warning Americans of his arrival in the States:

“People of America. Later today, @thehamsterscage @MrJamesMay and I will arrive in your country to make some noises.”
