It seems like yesterday that BMW debuted the sixth generation of the 5-Series, but it’s actually been three years since the launch of the sedan model that was followed in 2010 by the presentation of the more spacious and practical Touring variant.

BMW’s three to four year facelift cycle means that the 5-Series is approaching this stage; hence, the appearance of the first prototype models on the road.

Our scoop photographers nabbed a 5-Series Touring with splashes of swirly plastic camouflage on its front and rear ends as well as on the front fenders and mirror caps, which, of course, point at the sections of the car that will be aesthetically revised.

It’s pretty obvious from these images that BMW has left the car’s looks largely untouched, with the most visible changes to take place at the front end with the revamped headlamps, grille and bumper designs.

Some subtle styling upgrades along with new or revised equipment features are to be expected in the interior, while there’s also talk about the 5-Series gaining BMW’s newer turbocharged inline-six gasoline engine producing 320PS (316Hp), instead of the current unit’s 306PS (302Hp).
