When it comes to niches, Mercedes-Benz seems to have all bases covered. It has even launched an “estate” version of its existing CLS four-door coupe, but “with five doors and an elongated roof”…
In the SUV market, the three-pointed star already has the compact GLK, the mid-size ML and the full-on GL-Class and in a couple of years’ time, the A-Class-based GLA compact crossover.
Aside from the aforementioned models, Mercedes also offers the recently updated G-Wagen for those who want Land Rover Defender-rivaling off-road capabilities.
Well, someone at Stuttgart must have thought something along the lines of “why don’t we build a mini G-Wagen as well?” which probably sounded like a great idea because, as British Car publication reports, the project is currently under consideration.
Bearing the X156 code-name and the unofficial “mini-G” moniker, the new model will be a sister model to the GLA; or rather, the GLA’s hardcore, mud-plugging sibling.
Both compact crossovers will use the A-Class platform but the GLA will be more stylish and target buyers wanting on-road handling and luxury, while the “mini-G” will be more “butch” and square, echoing the original, full-size G-Wagen, as well as more capable off-road.
The engine range is said to start with either the 1.6-liter petrol engine found in the A- and B-Class or (more likely) with a 2.0-liter unit, and in typical Merc fashion, include a number of petrol and diesel variants.
Surprisingly, given the G-Wagen’s heritage, the report claims that the “mini-G” will also be offered in front-wheel drive guise – presumably for those who want to look the part but won’t ever venture off road, which doesn’t make any sense to us to be honest…
The all-wheel drive 4Matic versions, however, are expected to be the most popular, despite ditching the G-Wagen’s three separate locking differentials for a much more conventional Haldex clutch, as is the norm for the class.
The X156 hasn’t recieved the green light yet but Car sources claim that it’s “first in line” for approval ahead of other projects like an A-Class coupe. If it gets the nod from Mercedes’ powers-that-be, it is expected to hit the market in mid-2015.
