French carmaker Peugeot is looking to expand its range of crossover and SUV models that currently includes the 3008, 4008 (based on the Mitsubishi Outlander Sport / ASX), 4007 and 508 RXH with a new entry level model, likely to be named 2008 or 208 RXH.

This small crossover is based on the recently launched 208 supermini and will compete with the likes of the Volkswagen CrossPolo and possibly the Nissan Juke.

However, unlike the CrossPolo that is essentially a Polo with plenty of plastic cladding, the 2008 will sport a unique body.

These spy pictures show that compared to the 208 and aside from the raised suspension and chunky roof bars, the crossover features a longer rear overhang together with a newly designed bumper and a different tailgate, plus a more upright front end.

We’ve heard that the 2008 may be the first car within the PSA Group to receive the firm’s new petrol-electric hybrid powerplant, which will work much in the same way as the Hybrid4 diesel-electric system, with the petrol unit driving the front wheels and the electric motor the rear axle.

Look for the 2008 / 208 RXH making its debut sometime next year.
