Remember when Top Gear USA tried to outrun a golf ball being hit by a pro golfer with three open-top sports cars in episode 13 of Season 1?

Well, Mercedes-Benz UK came up with an idea to try to catch the golf ball instead of trying to beat it for its latest promotional campaign.

The car of choice was a Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG Roadster with ex-F1 racing driver David Coulthard behind the wheel and pro-golfer Jake Shepherd being the one to hit the ball.

The German carmaker tells us that Coulthard had to chase down the golf ball struck at 178mph or 286km/h. Following several practice runs one of which resulted in a broken windshield, Coulthard managed to catch Shepherd’s ball on only their second proper attempt.

According to Mercedes, the car caught the ball 275 (902 feet) metres away from the tee, setting a new Guinness World Record the “farthest golf shot caught in a moving car”.
