When it comes to brake checking, we can all agree that it’s not only very dangerous, but also stupid in the age of the dash cams and smartphones.
Before these gadgets came along, logic would have it that a brake checker could provoke an accident and then get to repair his or her car for free, since the driver coming from behind would always be found guilty for not maintaining a safe distance.
Well, not anymore. The following dash cam video from the UK reveals a classic case of brake checking, even though the culprit is more likely a lunatic than a scammer. In the footage captured by a truck’s dash cam on the M18 near Doncaster, we see a third-generation Renault Mégane going past the heavy vehicle on the fast lane and then moving to the outside lane in front of it.
Nothing wrong with that, but the hatchback then started braking for no reason. The truck got dangerously close but the driver managed to avoid contact by braking hard. The “genius” behind the wheel of the Renault decided to have another go, with the result being a wrinkled tailgate for his Mégane.
The crazy thing that makes it hard to wrap our heads around this event is the fact that the brake checker then stopped the car on the shoulder and called the police himself, not knowing there was a dash cam mounted on the truck.
While that can be qualified as an honest mistake, not realizing he was drunk and without insurance certainly can’t. One doesn’t have to be a fortune teller to guess what happened next.
