The third and by far the most fuel efficient model in the new VW Beetle’s U.S. lineup, the new TDI clean diesel, has finally been priced following a previous announcement about its availability in the States in February.
Prices for the new Beetle TDI start at $23,295 for the six-speed manual gearbox model and at $24,395 for the six-speed DSG dual-clutch automatic transmission option, with all prices excluding a destination charge of $770 (*).
There are three trim levels available with the diesel powertrain.
All models are equipped with standard features such as power windows, cruise control, V-Tex Leatherette seating, the “Käeferfach” secondary glovebox, Bluetooth tech, a leather-wrapped multifunction steering wheel with audio controls, keyless entry with push-button start, SiruisXM Satellite Radio and a Media Device Interface with iPod cable.
The Beetle TDI is powered by VW’s 2.0-liter turbocharged, direct-injection Clean Diesel engine delivering an output of 140hp and 236 lb-ft of peak torque.
While Volkswagen originally predicted a fuel economy of 39 mpg highway and 29 mpg city, the German company now projects up to 41 mpg highway and 32 mpg city for the manual gearbox model.
By comparison, the base 170HP 2.5-liter gasoline engine model returns an estimated 31 mpg highway and 22 mpg city with a five-speed manual, and 29 mpg highway and 22 mpg city with the optional six-speed auto.
