A new Alfa Romeo 8C is in the works and according to Car Magazine, it will be a hybrid supercar with performance to rival the best Ferrari has to offer.
The late Sergio Marchionne confirmed the 8C would return while speaking in June about FCA’s future product strategy but failed to provide many specifics.
Unlike the previous-generation 8C, the new car will feature a mid-engine layout rather than having a big, heavy engine hanging over the front wheels. Additionally, the new 8C will be underpinned by a carbon fiber monocoque and use the same twin-turbo 2.9-liter V6 engine as the Alfa Romeo Giulia Quadrifoglio.
Stunning looks and blistering performance could make for the perfect supercar.
In its current form, this engine delivers a mighty 500 hp but with some modifications, is predicted to pump out closer to 600 hp when installed in the 8C. While a 600 hp, mid-engine Alfa Romeo would be awesome, the Italian marque will allegedly take things even further by supplementing the internal combustion engine with an electric motor adding 200 hp, bringing the magic number up to 800 hp.
To put that into perspective, it’s significantly more than the 710 hp offered by Ferrari’s current mid-engine king, the 488 Pista. Performance of the new 8C should be rather brisk as a result and a 0-62 mph (100 km/h) time of below 3 seconds is inevitable.
Beyond delivering an impressive amount of grunt, the new 8C should come complete with an advanced torque vectoring system and be able to navigate a corner or two with poise.
Production details remain unconfirmed but it’s thought that fewer than 1000 units will be built.
