All NASCAR racecars are rear-wheel drive vehicles based on a tube frame with power coming from a V8 engine. That said, aside from some styling similarities and their names, they have nothing else in common with their production counterparts.
Toyota’s entry in the next season of the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series, which was fitted with a body that imitates the look of the latest Camry sedan, made its debut this week at (Toyota Racing Development’s (TRD) Salisbury facility in North Carolina.
“We’re thrilled to finally unveil our new 2013 Camry and we think NASCAR fans will really appreciate that our new on-track Camry looks like the one in their driveways,” said Ed Laukes, Toyota U.S. vice president of marketing communications and motorsports.
Next season’s NASCAR racers will look a bit more like the production models after a change of rules.
“NASCAR and all four manufacturers were brought together to guide the direction of the new cars. We all worked together to put the ‘S’ back in NASCAR — we all wanted race cars that look more like our stock, production models — and together we accomplished that,” commented Lee White, president and general manager of TRD.
“Our new Camry for 2013 is a great looking race car. Everyone at Toyota is eager to have our drivers in a race car that more resembles the street Camry,” he added.
