2018 VW Tiguan And Touran Recalled Worldwide Over Possible Fire Risk

Volkswagen is conducting a safety campaign surrounding all units of the Tiguan SUV and Touran MPV produced up to July 5, 2018.

As pointed out by Kfz-Betrieb earlier this week, the recall affects a total of 700,000 cars worldwide equipped with the optional panoramic roof and ambient lighting.

The LED module in the light strip hasn’t been well insulated, so it’s been reported that humidity can cause a short circuit. In more extreme cases, this could cause a fire, although it’s unknown whether the automaker is aware of any incidents related to this condition.

In Germany alone, approximately 22,500 units of the Touran and 30,000 examples of the Tiguan are affected by this problem, although owners can still use them until further notice, according to a Volkswagen spokesperson quoted by the aforementioned publication.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) is already recalling the 2018 Tiguans since July 24. A total of 45,457 units of the SUV are being included in this safety campaign, all of them equipped with the optional panoramic sunroof.

“The LED module for the panoramic sunroof ambient light bar may short circuit”, noted the watchdog, admitting that it “can increase the risk of fire”.

For now, technicians are providing a temporary fix, by “disconnecting the power supply for the panoramic sunroof LED module, until a future service action can safely reactivate the feature”.
