Jaguar’s baby crossover isn’t exactly what one would call a brand new model, as it has been around in Europe since last year.
However, E-Pace deliveries in the United States only began in April 2018, which is why we haven’t had the chance to see that many reviews filmed on US soil. Consumer Reports tries to fix that with a quick drive video of the 2018 Jaguar E-Pace that gives us the low-down on the British small luxury SUV.
For starters, the E-Pace is not quite as British as Jaguar would like you to believe. That’s because it’s built in Austria by Magna Steyr. While outsourcing is a common practice in the auto industry, it’s nothing to worry about if the quality standards are upheld.
Therein lies the first problem with the E-Pace, as it doesn’t quite live up to the “luxury SUV” tag Jaguar slaps on it. Consumer Reports found it neither luxurious nor refined enough.
The ride comfort suffers on bumpy roads, and the cabin has too many hard plastics and rough edges for a car that starts at $38,600 – but can easily reach $45,000 or more depending on the selected trim level and features.
Not everything is bad about the 2018 Jaguar E-Pace, however. The 246-hp 2.0-liter turbocharged gasoline engine is lively, the steering is accurate and responsive, and the sporty suspension keeps body roll to a minimum. To sum things up, the small Jag is quick, nimble and a joy to drive on twisty roads. You just have to learn whether you can live with its shortcomings or not.
