It’s pretty obvious that the future of gaming is in VR, and while we might be many years away from the technology being able to fool our brains into thinking it’s all real, the progress made along the way can be fascinating.

This video, put together by Kajot2111, does a really good job at not necessarily making us think it’s real (because the graphics are still way off), but making us feel immersed in the action.

Technically, we’re not entirely sure how it was done, but we suspect a green screen. For example, the steering wheel is real, as are the hands operating it. That footage was then projected onto Assetto Corsa, for a very believable drive on the Transfagarasan – which is one of the world’s most spectacular roads as far as car enthusiasts are concerned.

The action flows seamlessly between the real steering inputs and the way the virtual car responds, which by the way is an E92 BMW M3. To this day the E92 remains one of the most fun to drive cars BMW has ever produced. It’s very easy to light up its rear tires, while its naturally-aspirated 4.0-liter V8 engine is responsive and punchy.

Real life outputs are 420 PS (414 HP) and 400 Nm (295 lb-ft) of torque, which meant that you could reach 100 km/h (62 mph) from a standstill in under 5 seconds as long as you were driving either the Coupe or the 4-door version. The Convertible was a bit slower.
