Unless it’s a highly tuned example with more power than yesterday’s supercars, the fifth generation Volkswagen Golf doesn’t impress anyone anymore.

And for good reasons, given that its production ceased 10 years ago and VW’s compact hatch is currently in its seventh generation.

Moreover, Volkswagen is already developing the eighth generation that’s set to be unveiled next summer – but for now, we’ll go back to the Mk5 or, more accurately, one particular example.

It may look like an OTT rendering, but rest assured, this car is real. Also, everything is stock, too, if we don’t count that low-rider stance and custom wheels. However, that’s exactly what makes it stand out, starting with an air suspension that brings the entire body dangerously close to the tarmac.

The wheels come from CCW Classic and were previously used on a variety of cars, such as the Toyota Supra, Ford Mustang and Chevrolet Corvette – all of them way hotter than an old Golf.

The wheelmaker says the 8×18-inch three-piece forged rims, with 6061-T6 forged aluminum construction, fit the three-door compact hatchback like a glove. They’re finished in Polished Gloss, have a 20-spoke pattern and are supposed to give the car a “clean and aggressive” look.

In isolation, the rims look OK, but the minimal ground clearance and their intrusion in the wheel wells don’t do the Golf justice.
