As extreme as the Mercedes-Benz G500 4×4² is, some owners seem to feel the need to make it even more bonkers. Look no further than Jon Olsson, who chopped the roof off his G500 4×4² so it could fit in Monaco’s low parking garages.
Now we have stumbled upon a second G500 4×4² that has had its roof tampered with, only this time the operation was a bit more elaborate than in Olsson’s case.
The owner of a Brabus-tuned G500 4×4² brought it to a body shop called RDB LA, asking to have the roof chopped. Obviously, that’s easier said than done, but the folks from RDB LA didn’t say no to the challenge and got to work, using the Mercedes-Maybach G650 Landaulet as inspiration.
They decided to build something as close to the factory look as possible, which meant the G500 4×4² had to feature a fully functional open top, just like the Landaulet. It wasn’t an easy thing to do, given that the Maybach-branded model features ultra expensive modifications — not to mention the fact that it’s 2-ft (610-mm) longer.
While cutting the body was easy, getting the details right was a real challenge. RDB LA had to build custom C/D pillars complete with custom glass to make the G500 4×4² look like a Landaulet. They also made an 8-way adjustable custom electric rear seat, and since the existing rear seating had to be removed, the floorboard and floor carpeting had to be redone.
There were lots of other details to take care of, but in the end, everything seems to have come together properly — and the good thing is the modifications didn’t lead to a single error message in the instrument cluster.
Rounding off the changes was a unique matte chrome wrap, as the owner wanted the exterior to look like metal. Check out the video to see how the G500 4×4² Landaulet came to life.
