Unless they’ve been heavily modified, like Boba Motoring’s crazy Volkswagen Golf GTI, hot hatches pose no threat to modern supercars.

That’s most of the time, at least, as one particular Lamborghini Aventador appears to have been beaten into submission by an Audi RS3 Sportback. The race in question took place a few weeks ago, and can be seen at the 3:27 mark in the video posted at the end of the article, which also shows a number of other drag races.

Normally, we wouldn’t have spoiled the result for you, but it’s not that often that we see a compact model being faster in a quarter-mile acceleration than a blue-blooded exotic.

The driver of the RS3 Sportback had a better start and seems to have crossed the finish line first. He then celebrated the surprising victory by putting his hand out the window.

While the exterior of the German mega hatch seems stock, it probably hides some mods in the engine – or else we doubt it would have been able to keep up, never mind outgunning, an Aventador.

Unfortunately, there’s no info whatsoever concerning the modifications or the output of the RS3’s turbocharged 2.5-liter five-cylinder. However, at 400 PS (394 hp / 294 kW) and 480 Nm (354 lb-ft) of torque in the latest iteration, the stock unit is already very powerful, pushing the car from 0 to 100 km/h (0-62 mph) in 4.1 seconds, and up to a top speed of 280 km/h (174 mph) with the electronic speed limiter removed.

However impressive that might be, it’s definitely no match for the 700 PS (515 kW, 690 bhp) of the Lambo’s 6.5-liter V12, nor its 2.9-second 0-100 km/h acceleration time. Thus, logic dictates that the Audi must have been tuned to claim that victory. In any case, the clip makes for a nice viewing, especially since there’s no silly music – just the sound of the cars racing each other.
