BMW Details New Configurable Digital Cockpit Ahead Of 3-Series Reveal

In case you didn’t notice, BMW’s latest models come with the company’s all-new Live Cockpit that features the BMW Operating System 7.0.

The brand’s latest and newest models, including the new X5, 8-Series, Z4 and the much-awaited 3-Series will feature this new, fully-digital display and control concept that will also feature over-the-air updates. The infotainment system comes with a 10.25-inch high-definition touchscreen while the instrument cluster gets a 12.3-inch display.

BMW’s new system will be able to be operated via the classic iDrive controller, touch, voice or gesture control. The new advanced voice control features what BMW calls ‘natural language understanding’, meaning you won’t have to talk like a robot in order to work your way through the system. In addition, the gesture control function has been expanded to include two additional gestures, bringing the total up to seven.

The infotainment menu gets a new, flatter structure, combining vertical lists and horizontal bars for faster access. There’s also a new quick access toolbar, where your most frequently used functions can be found.

The new digital instrument cluster combines 2D and 3D graphics with animation. BMW decided that their display will no longer replicate analogue circular gauges. These are replaced by arced elements that open towards the center. Navigation content is displayed in the middle with an orientation map, while choosing the ECO Pro mode will have the rev-counter replaced with by current fuel consumption and average speed readings. Accent color is also mode-dependent.

As mentioned previously, the new system will feature over-the-air updates. BMW says that as of next year, the Remote Software Upgrade will allow customers to book functions or services customized for their car retroactively. The BMW Connected App will notify the owner when an update is available, with the download taking place directly in the app. The update procedure Is then completed when the smartphone is connected to the vehicle. The update can also be performed via the vehicle’s built-in SIM card.

BMW will reveal the all-new 3-Series at the Paris Auto Show, on October 2.
