The first-generation Chevrolet Orlando wasn’t very memorable, but the company is hoping for greater success with the redesigned model which recently debut in China.
Looking far more stylish than its predecessor, the 2019 Orlando has a bold design which mimics newer models such as the Blazer and Malibu. The change isn’t too surprising as Chevrolet says the MPV was inspired by the FNR-X concept which debuted at the Shanghai Auto Show last year.
The front of the Orlando is dominated by a massive “double grille” which is flanked by LED headlights and sporty air intakes. Moving further back, we can see plastic body cladding, a sportier greenhouse and 17-inch aluminum wheels. The model also has a tailgate-mounted spoiler and LED taillights.
Buyers looking for a sportier appearance can opt for the Orlando Redline which features black bowtie badges as well as black and red accents.
The improved styling carries over to the cabin as drivers will find a more upscale interior with higher quality materials. Highlights include a three-spoke steering wheel, an 8-inch infotainment system and an automatic climate control system with an air filter. The Orlando also has a six-speaker audio system, dual USB charging ports and chrome accents.
Thanks to a slightly longer wheelbase, which now measures 110 inches (2,796 mm), the Orlando can comfortably seat up to seven people. The second row features an adjustable backrest and 8.2 inches (210 mm) of front to rear travel. The third row gains improved entry and egress thanks to one-touch buttons that fold the second row seats down.
In terms of practicality, Chevrolet says the Orlando can hold 16.9 cubic feet (479 liters) of cargo when the third row seats are folded down. That figure can be expanded to 53.6 cubic feet (1,520 liters) when all the rear seats are down. When all the seats are in use, Chevrolet says there’s only enough room for “three large backpacks or two 20-inch (508 mm) suitcases.”
Power is provided by a turbocharged 1.35-liter engine that produces 160 hp (120 kW / 163 PS) and 169 lb-ft (230 Nm) of torque. It can be connected to either a six-speed manual or a six-speed automatic transmission.
The 2019 Orlando is currently on sale and Chinese pricing starts at RMB 119,900 ($17,455 / £13,390 / €15,035).
