The 2019 Chevrolet Silverado and GMC Sierra will be offered with a new 3.0-liter Duramax turbodiesel six-cylinder engine. GM hasn’t said much about the engine, but it specifications might have just been leaked.
TFLtruck says a reader sent in pictures of GM Canada’s dealer website where the engine’s performance specifications were listed. They show the diesel will produce 282 hp (210 kW / 285 PS) and 450 lb-ft (609 Nm) of torque.
If those numbers are accurate, the Duramax would outgun the 3.0-liter Power Stroke diesel engine that is available in the Ford F-150. It produces 250 hp (186 kW / 253 PS) and 440 lb-ft (595 Nm) of torque.
While nothing is official, GM has previously hinted their diesel engine would be more powerful than Ford’s. When the Silverado was unveiled in January, GM executive vice president Mark Reuss said “I’m not going to go into the numbers today, but some of our competition have given numbers on their diesels, and let’s just say I’m confident that we’ll have the best performing diesel in this segment.”
The pictures also indicate the 2019 GMC Sierra diesel will be able to return 28 mpg highway. The document doesn’t indicate which particular version of the truck is capable of returning that figure, but the most fuel-efficient version listed by the EPA – a rear-wheel drive model with the 5.3-liter V8 engine – returns 23 mpg highway.
If that 28 mpg number is correct, the diesel-powered Sierra will likely offer similar fuel economy ratings to the F-150. Of course, there are countless versions of the truck and the F-150 diesel has an EPA rating that ranges from 20 mpg city / 25 mpg highway / 22 mpg combined to 22 mpg city / 30 mpg highway / 25 mpg combined.
In terms of towing, the Sierra diesel will reportedly be able to pull up to 7,800 lbs (3,538 kg). This is one area where the F-150 diesel has a clear advantage as Ford has previously confirmed the truck has a towing capacity of up to 11,400 lbs (5,170 kg). That’s a pretty sizable difference of 3,600 lbs (1,632 kg).
