Ferrari’s iconic red color scheme is certainly not going anywhere. However, the Italian outfit has revised the look of its cars earlier this week by adding new white logos referencing Philip Morris International’s new ‘Mission Winnow’ project.
The logos were added to the engine cover, rear wing, side pods, nose, mirrors, halo and even the uniforms and helmets worn by Sebastian Vettel and Kimi Raikkonen. It’s not quite a re-branding, but the changes are easily noticeable.
Since tobacco sponsorship isn’t permitted in Formula 1, Philip Morris hasn’t been able to advertise its brands or products on Ferrari cars for years. However, the company is now looking into smoke-free technologies and has already extended its title sponsorship of Ferrari until 2021, reports Autosport.
So what is Mission Winnow? Apparently it’s an initiative dedicated to science, technology and innovation, and an attempt to build a better future.
“I would like to thank Philip Morris because they have the right to brand all the car since the beginning of the season,” stated Ferrari team boss Maurizio Arrivabene. “They were respectful of the red of the car, they left the car absolutely red.”
“The reason why is simple: they said they are not in a hurry, our company’s changing, we are moving, launching a new mission.”
Mission Winnow is named after the practice of winnowing grain, which is where the expression “separating the wheat from the chaff” comes from.
Meanwhile, Philip Morris VP for global events Riccardo Parino, stated that their new initiative “is not related to any tobacco products,” and that it’s all about the transformation of their company.
“It’s very important to be with Ferrari because Ferrari exemplified the passion and this constant improvement that is the base for our future.”
