Porsche has already revealed a lot of details about the 2020 Taycan, but one thing the company hasn’t talked much about is pricing.
That’s starting to change as the Taycan’s vehicle model line director has told Auto News Europe “We’re expecting a price somewhere between a Cayenne and a Panamera.” In the United States, the Cayenne starts at $65,700 while the Panamera begins at $85,000.
That’s a pretty sizable difference of $19,300 and it leaves plenty of room for the Taycan to slot in between them. There’s no word exact pricing, but the model’s main competitor – the Tesla Model S – starts at $77,000.
The Taycan will likely put the Model S in a difficult position as Porsche has already confirmed the car will have two electric motors that produce a combined output in excess of 592 hp (441 kW / 600 PS). This will enable the car to accelerate from 0-62 mph (0-100 km/h) in less than 3.5 seconds and travel more than 310 miles (500 km) in the New European Driving Cycle (NEDC).
The Model S 75D, on the other hand, has two electric motor which develop a combined 518 hp (386 kW / 525 PS) and 387 lb-ft (524 Nm) of torque. This setup allows the car to run from 0-62 mph (0-100 km/h) in 4.4 seconds and have an NEDC range of 304 miles (490 km).
A quick look at those figures reveals the Taycan has a clear performance advantage, altogether both models offer a similar range. If Porsche were able to come pretty close to matching the Model S’ price, it could cause a number of Tesla shoppers to become Porsche buyers.
Of course, Tesla offers multiple versions of the Model S and Porsche is likely to follow suit with more powerful versions of the Taycan. Little is known about them, but Porsche Chief Financial Officer Lutz Meschke reportedly hinted at Taycan Turbo S which could cost as much as €200,000 ($230,010 / £175,549) in Germany.
