Audi Sport is prepping a few important updates for the second-gen R8, which is expected to debut before the end of the year or in early 2019.

Our vigilant spy photographers already caught a few prototypes in the wild, whose design updates were tucked beneath their camouflage wrap. Yet in the meantime, Audi has stepped up its game and previewed the facelifted R8 in an official teaser image released on social media.

Visual changes include a wider grille and larger air intakes in the front bumper, which has also welcomed a few changes of its own. The brand’s logo is still found on the front hood, and the headlights appear to have been slightly revised.

They may not be visible in the official picture dropped by Audi Sport, but the side skirts of the car seem to have been updated too, as previous spy shots revealed. Also, the 2019 Audi R8 will have a prominent diffuser, in addition to some other work carried on the outside.

One thing that has yet to be confirmed is whether or not the GT variant will arrive with the Lamborghini Huracan Performante’s identical output. In the Italian supercar, that 5.2-liter V10 delivers 640 PS (631 hp / 470 kW) and 600 Nm (443 lb-ft) of torque.

Of course, since the Audi R8 has to be more affordable than its Italian cousin, don’t expect any active aerodynamics or other key features that have given the Performante the edge over regular Huracans.
