If the previous-gen Peugeot 508 was interesting to look at, the new one is simply gorgeous.

Starting with the sculpted exterior, which adopts a five-door fastback body style, or coupe-saloon as the French car firm likes to call it, and ending with the bold-looking cabin that brings pretty much everything a 21st century driver needs, it makes for a compelling choice – at least on paper.

Peugeot states that the new 508’s nearest rival is the Audi A5 Sportback. It has a nearly identical length and slightly more rear legroom than Ingolstadt’s model. Nonetheless, more realistically speaking, it continues to challenge the likes of the Volkswagen Passat, Ford Mondeo and Skoda Superb, as Peugeot is not a premium brand and thus has to fight mainstream rivals.

Advanced driving assistance features include night vision, a segment-first, which uses an infrared camera to detect pedestrians at night or whenever the visibility drops significantly. Elsewhere, expect the usual amenities, including the infotainment system mounted in the middle of the dashboard that provides access to different functions of the car, jammed into a rather futuristically-styled cabin.

The engine lineup is quite generous and includes two petrol units and three diesels, topped by a hybrid that puts out 225 PS (222 hp / 166 kW). The electrified 508 has an electric-only range of up to 40 km (25 miles) courtesy of the 11.8 kWh battery.

Those who would rather opt for the most potent non-electrified model have to settle for the GT, which has an identical output to the hybrid. This is the variant chosen by AutoTopNL for another one of their POV driving videos, and was taken to the Autobahn for a top speed run.
