Audi has shut down claims that it’s working on a four-door version of the TT.
Less than two weeks ago, Auto Express claimed that Audi will ditch the coupe and convertible variants of the TT in the car’s next-generation and replace them with a four-door coupe model. Speaking with Car Advice, Audi head of communications Peter Oberndorfer said this isn’t happen.
“Actually we had the idea of a TT ‘family’, so to speak,” he said, referring to the Audi TT Sportback concept presented at the 2014 Paris Motor Show.
“Not so much anymore. I think the TT is an icon, and to do a family [car] out of that is quite difficult. And especially in these times where we have to concentrate more and more, because we have to do gasoline and diesels on the one side, and electrification on the other side.
“So you have to concentrate more and more and think about what you can do and what you can afford. So we’re quite happy with one TT at the moment,” Oberndorfer said.
While responding directly to the Auto Express report, Oberndorfer reaffirmed Audi’s stance on the TT.
“Where the recent stories came from, I don’t know. I don’t know about a four-door TT.”
According to reports, the next-generation TT was to be based on an updated version of the MQB platform and would have been approximately the same size as the TT Sportback concept but adopt new styling.
While a four-door TT doesn’t seem to be on the cards, sales of the TT have been slipping in recent years and the carmaker will have to think of ways to re-ignite interest in the sports car.
