A Porsche 911 SUV? Sounds Like A ‘Good Idea’, Says Exec

Porsche was criticized by purists for putting the Cayenne into production back in 2002, but stirring the waters has turned out to be a great decision for the automaker.

The Porsche Cayenne was quickly embraced by consumers worldwide. Three generations later, it’s still a big money-maker for the Stuttgart brand, with Porsche expanding its offerings with the smaller Macan.

Both high-riding vehicles benefit from some 911 influences, which is the pinnacle of the Porsche brand. But this is where the company drew the line, as the sports car couldn’t possibly be turned into an SUV, right?

Not really, because AutocarIndia asked Porsche’s Member of the Executive Board for Sales and Marketing, Detlev von Platen, about a possible 911 crossover/SUV, on the sidelines of the 2018 Los Angeles Auto Show. And to everyone’s surprise, the official called it “a good idea”.

“The 911 is the center point for all design at Porsche, and you will see its influence in other vehicles”, said von Platen. “But taking the 911 and making an SUV out of it? Taking it higher? That could be a good idea, and of course it won’t be a model range, but it will be a limited, very niche product.”

If Porsche decides to launch a jacked-up 911, then it would be the first time the moniker has been used on a different body style. So, will we see a modern-day 911 Safari for the road, or just another performance-oriented crossover?
