Renault’s upcoming restyled Espace has been spotted testing for the first time in prototype form, taking on some heavy winter conditions near the Arctic Circle.

The large MPV (by European standards), is clearly hiding changes to both the front and rear fascias, with the new internal headlight design being quite easy to spot, despite the camouflage. Renault will probably unveil the 2020 Espace sometime next year, giving large families in Europe something to cheer about.

Minor changes were to be expected

Renault isn’t the type of automaker to implement heavy styling changes on facelifted models, so when the updated Espace does come out, we expect to see maybe some new headlight graphics, a redesigned front bumper (visible in these spy images), and some changes at the rear as well, although that particular section of the car is very well covered up.

Overall, the fifth-generation Espace will obviously hold onto its part-MPV, part-crossover aesthetic, which has split opinions since the vehicle was unveiled at the 2014 Paris Motor Show, although this clearly is one of the sleekest-looking models in its segment, which also holds the likes of the Ford S-Max.

More tech & better efficiency

Renault hasn’t made a lot of changes to its Espace lineup recently, except for introducing a new Renault Sport-developed engine back in 2017 – specifically the 1.8-liter 225 HP TCe petrol unit. The facelifted model will probably hold onto it, while also boasting an updated diesel range.

Other expected changes include the exterior color palette, wheel options, on-board safety and connectivity features, improved software and probably new trim levels as well.
