Imagine opening up your Christmas gifts and finding a new Mercedes-Benz keyfob, only to discover it’s a craftily disguised 2GB flash drive – without a txt instruction file to find a Benz in your parking lot.
It looks like somebody had a few laughs giving this USB and having the recipient think it was actually a real Mercedes-Benz key fob, if only for a brief moment.
However, in order to pull off something like this, you have to make sure that the person you’re giving the flash drive to has never held a real Mercedes-Benz key in their hands, otherwise, they should be able to figure out that this is fake just by looking at it.
How to spot the difference
If you’ve worked with the Stuttgart-based automaker in an official capacity, then you’ve probably been around these types of items plenty of times. These flash drives might look a lot like the real deal, but are in reality noticeably smaller and a lot lighter. So the difference in size should be what tips you off first.
Then there’s the feel of it, the texture and the overall weight (holding one right now). It’s very plasticky, has no metal inserts and weighs considerably less than a real Mercedes key fob.
So technically, this shouldn’t fool anybody, although again, you would need to know what a real Mercedes key feels like beforehand. As for this particular one, it was given as a Christmas gift and the beneficiary actually got excited “for a minute”, according to a recent Reddit post. We feel their pain.
