The Corpus Christi Police Department has released dramatic video of their attempt to rescue a 70 year old man who was trapped inside his burning vehicle after an accident.
According to the department, the crash occurred on New Year’s Day when a vehicle traveling the wrong way collided with the SUV on SH 358. The crashed caused the SUV to roll over on its side and catch fire.
Given the life or death situation, officers and civilians rushed to assist in the rescue effort. As you can see in the dashcam video, they attempted to push the SUV upright. Their initial efforts were unsuccessful, but the group was eventually joined by more people and together they had enough strength to get the SUV right side up.

The video ends shortly thereafter, but the footage reveals the SUV suffered extensive front end damage in the crash. The police department also commended the efforts of officers and civilians, stating that the man likely wouldn’t have survived without their “heroic efforts.”
While the department’s release was light on details, KRIS 6 reports the accident was caused by 28 year old Richard Lopez, who is believed to have been intoxicated at the time and was pronounced dead at the scene.
Besides the 70 year old man, the SUV had three other occupants including a 47 year old female, a 21 year old male and a 20 year old female. Reports suggest the three were able to free themselves following the collision, but that remains unclear at this point. Regardless, all four suffered non-life threatening injuries. Which, given the grave danger they were in, means they got off this one lightly.
