After an unplanned leak earlier today, Audi finally got around to releasing official data along with more than sixty pictures and the first video of the A1 Sportback, which is more practical, five-door version of the German firm’s premium supermini.
The connection with its three-door sibling can be seen in the styling, though Audi’s designers did manage to add 6mm in both width and height to improve interior space. The five-door model’s length (3.95mm) and wheelbase of 2.47m are identical to the three-door version.
The A1 Sportback comes standard with four seats, but Audi does offer a fifth seat on request at no extra charge. According to the German company, headroom and shoulder room have each been increased by around one centimeter (0.39 in) over the three-door model.
The boot area of the A1 Sportback has a capacity of 270 liters (9.53 cu ft), which can be increased to 920 liters (32.49 cu ft) by folding down the split rear seat back.
On the engine front, European buyers will have a choice of three petrol and three diesel units, all turbocharged.
The gasoline engine range includes a 1.2-liter TFSI with 86HP and a combined fuel consumptions of 5.1lt / 100 km (46.1 US mpg), and two 1.4-liter TFSIs, one producing 122HP and the other 185HP. The most powerful version offers the A1 Sportback a 0-to-100 km/h (62 mph) time of 7.0 seconds and a top speed of 227 km/h (141 mph).
Those looking for a diesel can choose among two 1.6-liter TDIs with 90HP and 105HP, both of which consume 3.8 /lt 100 km (61.9 US mpg) on average, and a 2.0-liter TDI with 143HP that accelerates the A1 Sportback to 100 km/h in 8.5 seconds while returning a fuel consumption of 4.1/lt100 km (57.4 US mpg).
Audi offers the seven-speed S tronic dual clutch transmission as an option with the 1.4 TFSI 122HP and 1.6 TDI 90HP engines and as standard on the 185HP 1.4 TFSI model.
The new A1 Sportback will reach European showrooms next spring with pricing in Germany starting from €16,950 for the 1.2 TFSI petrol in the Attraction trim line, and €19,050 for the 1.6 TDI 90HP.
