With the introduction of the all-new 8-Series Coupe, BMW has the closest thing to a Mercedes-Benz S-Class Coupe rival.
Of course, the Bimmer is slightly smaller and costs about €2,750 ($3,108) less in Germany, in base form, but it’s a comfortable grand tourer packed with the latest technology available.
Also, in M850i xDrive spec, it’s a force to be reckoned with, hitting 100 km/h (62 mph) in 3.7 seconds thanks to its 4.4-liter twin-turbo V8 that makes 530 PS (523 hp / 390 kW) and 750 Nm (553 lb-ft) of torque.

The AMG S63 Coupe, on the other hand, is powered by a 4.0-liter twin-turbo V8, which in its latest iteration is more powerful, at 612 PS (603 hp / 450 kW) and 900 Nm (664 lb-ft) of torque. It needs 3.5 seconds to get to 100 km/h (62 mph) and, just like the BMW, has a 250 km/h (155 mph) electronically limited top speed.
Specs are good and well, but if you want to really see how these two mega coupes stack against each other, a real world drag race is much more telling. Luckily, we came across a video that pits the M850i against the AMG S63, both from a standing and a rolling start.
Mind you, the clip is in Russian. But you won’t need to decipher what the reviewer says to find out which of the two was quicker, as we all know that cars, and drag races in particular, speak an international “language”.
The M850i was also subjected to a dyno test, showing us its real-world output for the first time. We won’t spoil the outcome, so you know what to do next. Don’t, however, forget to bring popcorn, as the video is almost 34 minutes long. So, if you want to jump straight into the action, you can go to the 16-minute mark.
